Stories from the Silo Towns
Self-Initiated Project
Stories from the Silo Towns is a social documentary project that explores the communities, culture, and landscapes of Western Australia’s Wheatbelt. The publication seeks to highlight the people who live across this vast, often harsh environment, from small towns like Katanning and Northam to Albany on the southern coast, and the tenacity, creativity, and resilience that define their way of life. One of the central challenges of the project was presenting a region so expansive and diverse in a single cohesive format. The Wheatbelt’s breadth, both physically and culturally, risked overwhelming the narrative if not carefully structured. To address this, I developed a visual and editorial system that allowed each story to breathe while maintaining cohesion across the publication. Custom illustrations were created to complement the photography and text, capturing the texture, emotion, and character of the people and landscapes without distracting from the stories themselves. Another challenge was representing the Wheatbelt honestly, balancing the harsh realities of economic pressures, climate challenges, and town decline with the optimism, loyalty, and creativity of its residents. Through thoughtful design, careful pacing, and visual storytelling, the publication brings together these personal narratives, creating a catalogue that reflects the interconnectedness, continuity, and identity of this vital regional community.
