Love Sick — Andrew Nicholls
Andrew Nicholls
LOVE SICK documents the second decade of practice by Western Australian contemporary artist Andrew Nicholls, bringing together ten years of studio works, expansive curatorial projects, and writing that contextualises his evolving career. Designing this 300-page monograph required balancing academic depth, artistic nuance, and a visually engaging format that remained accessible to both new audiences and long-time followers. One of the central challenges was managing the breadth of content; the material ranged from delicate studio pieces to large-scale heritage engagements, alongside essays by leading curators and writers. Without careful structure, the book risked feeling dense or fragmented. I developed a clear editorial rhythm that allowed the reader to move through the decade in a way that felt fluid and intentional, with visual pacing that gave artworks room to breathe while supporting the critical writing that accompanied them. Another challenge lay in ensuring this volume stood as a companion to Nicholls’ previous monograph without becoming a repetition of it. By refining the typographic system, introducing a more mature visual language, and emphasising the progression of his practice, the design positions this book as a continuation rather than an echo. The final publication is a cohesive and elegantly constructed record that honours the complexity of Nicholls’ work while providing an engaging reading experience across its 300 pages.
